PARC Principles

There are four principles of layout for screen design. These are referred to as the PARC principles; they include Proximity, Alignment, Repeat, and Contrast.

Proximity is the distance between objects, and the grouping of similar information.

Alignment unites and organizes information (in the form of images or text) within a page.

Repetition and consistency are the same thing, the layout of the information should be consistent to unify and add visual interest.

Contrast, when used correctly can enhance the visual appearance of the page, contrast can be achieved through typeface choices, line thickness, colours, shapes, sizes and spaces.

The following examples illustrate a website before and after the PARC principles have been applied.
