There are four principles of layout for screen design. These are
referred to as the PARC principles; they include Proximity,
Alignment, Repeat, and Contrast.
• Proximity is the distance between objects,
and the grouping of similar information.
• Alignment unites and organizes information
(in the form of images or text) within a page.
• Repetition and consistency are the same
thing, the layout of the information should be consistent to unify
and add visual interest.
• Contrast, when used correctly can enhance
the visual appearance of the page, contrast can be achieved through
typeface choices, line thickness, colours, shapes, sizes and spaces.
The following examples illustrate a website before and after the
PARC principles have been applied.
